Yesterday, April 25, 2008, the suspects in the Sean Bell murder trial were acquitted of all charges by a Queens judge. A minimal, yet resounding public outcry has been heard through out the streets of Queens.
Since this is such an important event in New York City’s history I feel obligated to at least give it a serious day out of my rant. This whole week has been a complete expression of my ideas in the most satirical of forms but this will be completely different. This rant will just explain my personal opinion on the whole case.
Many of the people that are in a complete frenzy right now do not understand the true facts of the whole “incident”. I believe that, sadly, many people are just cheering for the “bandwagon” cry at the moment. Sean Bell was killed, no dispute about that and we all mourn his loss, but he was not murdered.
Murder is defined as the ability to kill intentionally and with premeditation. I find it hard to believe that the cops decided to kill someone that night before they even left their homes to go to the club.
The cops were staking the place out and a scuffle ensued inside of the bar. Allegedly, one of the police officers in car claimed to have seen a man running outside to go and get a gun. One of the police officers then followed the man and ran into Bell and his colleagues. Now this is where it gets controversial.
Bell and his friends sat inside the car and were about to leave. The officer, who had alerted backup already, approached the car and ALLEGEDLY said, “Police, everyone out with your hands up!”. Now the police said that they saw a fourth man in the car, who as I said before, was supposed to go and get his gun, which was supposed to be in the car.
Bell, who was intoxicated at the time (bet none of you knew that), was driving the car. Bell floored the gas pedal when he saw the police. It gets blurry here. The officers said that they showed them their badges, and that they were police while Bells friends did not think that they were police. An intoxicated Bell floored the pedal and drove into a police Minivan. At the same time the police officer initiated the shots and started firing.
50 shots. One officer even reloaded. But is this murder? No. It is excessive force.
I do believe that the police may have acted rashly in the entire incident. But before we crucify them, we must take the whole job into a perspective. Being a police officer is no job that ANYONE chooses to do all though some do. Most people do it for the benefits and the salary. Being an UNDERCOVER cop is probably one of the most dangerous and difficult parts of the job. How do you know when to properly use force? How do you know when to stay incognito and off the radar?
If you were that police officer, and a car was accelerating at a high speed into you and you already had your gun drawn –
I do not care who any of you people are. You would have fired on the car too.
Maybe NOT 50 shots, but you would have still fired into the car. It only takes one well placed shot to kill a man, so 3 shots could have killed all three. I believe that cop SHOULD not have reloaded and that can be deemed as excessive force. The common saying, 50 shots? Murder, is completely invalidated because it does not give fact to the situation. How are you going to tell me, that these four cops said to themselves,
“Let’s kill this idiot”.
In order for it to be murder and stay TRUE to the definition, IT MUST be premeditated.
That makes NO sense to me. I am not saying that Bell deserved to die. RIP no one deserves to die and I hope it COULD have been handled differently; but you people are taking this out of context.
If a 2 TON CAR is approaching you AND YOU HAVE A GUN…
This is not duck hunt. If it were you, you are shooting the car too.
Some say that this was a racist attack. AN AFRICAN AMERICAN MAN (as dark as me) was one of the people who SHOT at the car. Maybe he was an Uncle Tom or maybe he was doing his job when he saw one of his colleagues about to be run over.
Some people are calling me a traitor. Some people are calling me an idiot. I am neither. I took the facts and explained them to you, so make your own decision. I believe the cops SHOULD have received time but not for murder. Excessive Force.
The story of the fourth man was completely thrown out because no cop called for back up to stop them.
And this whole “Fuck the Police” attitude is COMPLETELY FLAWED. If your car gets stolen, who are you going to call? The police. If a man robs your house, who are you going to call? The police. If your house gets burnt down who do you call? The fire department AND the police.
Think OUTSIDE the box people. If you have a contradicting opinion feel free to tell me in the comment area. I will actually comment today.
BUT do not throw allegations WHICH YOU CANNOT BACK UP. I will, I WILL, tear it apart.
Believe me.
But, Professor Llano? Yea he is going to tear this apart.
